CHATHAM - Matthew Cochrane Abbott , 93, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009. He died with the same dignity that he lived his life.

Born Aug. 27, 1916, in Watertown, he was one of the four sons of Charles Matthew Abbott and Frances Tucker Abbott .

Matthew graduated from Westmont High School, Montreal, Canada, in 1934, and earned an engineering degree, BSE, from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1938, with an illuminating engineering major. He worked for Sylvania Electric from 1939 to 1949 in the development of the fluorescent lamp and was the chief engineer of the fixture division.

During the World War II years, he worked on the design and manufacturing of the proximity fuse contract of Sylvania with the Navy, which was credited with winning the Battle of the Bulge. During the postwar years, he worked for the Sylvania Colonial Radio on wire recorders, tape recorders, and radio circuit components.

In 1950, he joined W.S. Macdonald Co. to design electronic inventory machines for department stores, including Hudson's in Detroit, Rich's in Atlanta, and B. Altman in New York City. In 1957, he worked for General Telephone and Electronics (GT&E) as an engineering specialist on top secret contracts with the Army Signal Corps, National Security Agency, and the Space and Missile Command.

Upon his retirement in 1978, he settled in Chatham, and Venice, Fla., during the winter months. He enjoyed gardening, bird carving, and building miniature doll houses complete with furniture. His bountiful garden vegetables were shared by many family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jean Beers Abbott ; two sons, Peter Cochrane Abbott and Brian John Abbott ; five grandchildren, Jennifer Devlin, Michael Abbott , Courtney Abbott , Jason Abbott and Lindsay Abbott ; and a great-grandson, Connor Flemming.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at the First Congregational Church, 650 Main St., Chatham. All friends are welcome.
