Sun City -- Dr. Merrill M. Benfer, 82, a retired Iowa physician who became a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons in 1947, died March 26, 1980. Dr. Benfer moved here in 1965 from Davenport, Iowa. He was a graduate of University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1928 and later was an instructor a year at University Hospital in Iowa City. He was World War I Army veteran and was listed in Who's Who in Iowa. Survivors include his children, Mrs. Thomas W.(Virginia) Clithero, Atlantic, Iowa, Mrs. John L. (Judy) Phillips, Dunlap, IL, and Lawrence M. Benfer, Fresno, CA; eight grandchildren; three brothers, Vernon, Lawrence and Arthur Benfer, all out of state; and five sisters, Doris Palmer, Alma Kleppe, Bess Polhemus, Irene Penson, Lenora Turpin. Services were in United Church of Sun City.
