Hamilton was the first child born to Hamilton Hains Sr. and Harriett Govane Ridout Ligon Hains in 1932. He served in the Navy for four years and is a Korean War veteran. He had a love of history, reading, genealogy, computers, and technology. He is a direct descendant of the 30th Governor of Maryland, Thomas Watkins Ligon.

Hamilton married Charlotte (nee Coar) Hains, who had three children from her previous marriage.

Hamilton did not have any children of his own.

Across from his grave is a bench which is inscribed with one of his favorite quotes by Conrad Aiken, "Cosmos mariner destination unknown."
