Alton S. Berg was born Aug. 10, 1915, the son of Nels and Christine (Vingelen) Berg , in Vineland County, Polk Township, Minn. He attended Climax School. In 1934, he moved to Climax, where he worked several jobs. He joined the U.S. Army and landed in Normandy, France, on D-Day. He received a Purple Heart. After his discharge, he moved back to Climax and worked as a mechanic. He married Virginia Vettern June 19, 1946, in Crookston. They lived in Climax. He was elected village constable in 1946. He worked for the Polk County Highway Department, retiring in 1981. After retirement, he operated road graders for Hammond and Belmont townships, both in Polk County, and was a caretaker for the Belmont Park.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Ronn, East Grand Forks, and Wayne (Pam), Climax; daughters, Cheryl (Mike) Beltz, West Fargo, N.D., and Eileen (Kelly) Smith, East Grand Forks; nine grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Friday in Climax Lutheran Church. Visitation:One hour before services in the church. Burial:Skatvold Cemetery, Climax. (Grand Forks Herald, July 18, 1996)
