LANETT - Mr. Sammie Lee Baker Jr. of Lanett died Monday, Aug. 8, 2011 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.

Funeral services are planned for Friday, Aug. 12 at 1 p.m. at Goodsell United Methodist Church in Lanett with Dr. Randy B. Kelley officiating. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery in West Point.

He leaves to cherish his memories four daughters, Sarah Lavon Baker, Carmen (Richard) McCoy and Leta F. Baker, all of West Point, and Sandra (Charles) Bagley of Lanett; four grandchildren, Charles Brandon Bagley, Brittany Bagley and Bryan Bagley, all of Lanett, and Richard Julian McCoy of West Point; two great-granddaughters, Ja'Miya Amauria McCoy of West Point and Kenadi Alyce Martin of Lanett; one great-grandson, Kameron Rasheed Bagley of Lanett; in-laws, Edith (Nathaniel) Fanning and Florine Griggs, both of Lanett, Mary (Donald) Potts of West Point and Fletcher (Odell) Lee of Columbus, Ohio; John Minter, a special brother; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mr. Baker confessed to Christ at Goodsell United Methodist Church in Lanett at an early age. He was a 1956 graduate of Lanier High School. His passion was playing softball. He was the type of person who never met a stranger. Mr. Baker was a member of the Columbus Senior League 6. He worked several jobs around the Valley area, and the most recent one was Givorns Foods in West Point. Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Lee Baker.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Aug. 11 from 1 to 8 p.m. at Morgan's Funeral Home Chapel in Lanett.

The remains will lie in state at the church on Friday from noon until the funeral hour.

Morgan's Funeral Home of Lanett is handling arrangements.
