Charles Prouty's military and pension records show that he served two enlistments in the Union Army during the Civil War.
He enlisted the first time on September 10, 1861 in the 14th Battery, Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery, serving until August 30, 1862 when he was discharged under a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability for unknown reasons at present. For undetermined reason(s) he then left the Cleveland area for Milford, Massachusetts, where he enlisted at 21 years of age in Company G, 2nd Regiment, Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, September 1, 1864. He was mustered out June 26, 1865 at New Berne, North Carolina and discharged July 18, 1865.

Returning to Cleveland, married, and with his wife, Harriet L. Prouty, had 7 children. He supported his family by working as a masonry contractor. According to the 1910 U.S. Census for Ward 6, Cleveland, Ohio, four of his seven children were still living--Ella, Edith, Helen G., and Clyde A. Another sibling, Charles, born in 1880, was deceased by 1910 but the names of the other two are unknown--perhaps they died as infants.

Charles applied for an invalid soldiers' pension, February 24, 1892, which was issued as Certificate #1111883 in Ohio. He belonged to Brooklyn Post 368, Grand Army of the Republic, Department of Ohio. At the time of his death he resided as 1210 Cranford in Lakewood, Ohio.
