He was born in Abingdon, Virginia and was the son of the late Edd and Nellie Sutherland. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Shirley A. Sutherland.
Tom was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He had lived in Bluff City, Tennessee for the past 37 years. He was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Korean Conflict. Tom was a retired plant manager from Sperry Unisys after 32 1/2 years of service. He had later worked at B.F.I. in Kingsport, Tennessee and Roll-It in Bluff City, Tennessee. He was a Mason where he was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Bristol, Virginia and was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church in Abingdon, Virginia.
He is survived by two daughters, Lisa "Taryn" Fox and her husband, Jeff, of Bluff City, Tennessee and Sherry Grizzle of Bristol, Virginia; two sons, Joel "Craig" Herndon and his wife, Marie, of Evans, Georgia and Thomas F. Sutherland, Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Bristol, Virginia; one sister, Shirley Clevinger and her husband, Jack, of Kingsport, Tennessee; six grandchildren, Emily Herndon, Rodry Herndon, Caty Herndon, Todd Fox, Luke Fox, and Ian Sutherland; one niece, Cindy Hardee of Kingsport, Tennessee, and one nephew, Dr. Ed Clevinger and his wife, Vicki, of Kingsport, Tennessee.
Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 8:00 pm with Dr. Ed Clevinger officiating.
The committal service and interment will be held at 2:30 pm Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon, Virginia with Dr. Clay Austin officiating.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Bristol V.F.W. Honor Guard, Post No. 6975. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Johnson, Eddie Webb, and Gary Rader.
