The official date of death is July 14, 2012; however, when his sister Lucy and a couple of his friends were going through his things, they found a newspaper dated July 12 in the panniers on his bike. He did not show up for a rehearsal the evening of July 12 and did not call, which was very unusual for him, so they are pretty certain that he died on July 12.

He attended University High School in Bloomington, Indiana, and Indiana University, studying art. He had many artistic talents including portraiture, sketching, pottery, and sculpting. He loved Scots-Irish music and played flute in a small ensemble. He was an excellent chef and an avid reader. His friends characterized him as warm, kind, an attentive listener and one who was always willing to help others in need.
