Alma Jean (AJ) was the second child of her family and the only girl. Her early life was spent in small towns of rural Arkansas. In 1936 her family moved to Plainview, TX where she graduated from Plainview High School. After graduation she went to work in the office of Newman Motors, a Chrysler-Plymouth dealership. In about 1941 she relocated to the Denver area to work for Mr. Newman in another enterprise as a personal secretary. On the job she met her future husband, Al Hess, who was a technical rep for IBM repairing office machines. They were married on December 2, 1950 and together had four children: Kenneth Gregory, Dale Lowell, Jeffrey Alan and Rhonda Glenn. AJ became a housewife raising her children, but later in life became a real estate agent and worked for many years selling real estate. The marriage ended in divorce.
