Son of Lewis D. Thompson & Mourning Bailey. Grandson of Sherod Thompson & Charlotte Land. Note: Year of birth is estimated.

Enlisted as a Private in Company G 16th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry on July 20,1861. Killed at Crampton's Gap, Md. September 14,1862.

The 16th GA Infantry Regiment (also called Sallie Twiggs Regiment) was organized during the summer of 1861. The ten companies were raised in the counties of Columbia, Elbert, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hart, Jackson, Madison, and Walton (although there were members from other counties). Company G was organized in Jackson County, GA and was also known as the Jackson Rifles.

The 16th Georgia was sent to Richmond, Va where it was assigned to Howell Cobb's Brigade and encamped from July until Oct 20 1861 when dispatched to Yorktown. The 16th fought with Magruder at Yorktown, Lee's Mill, and Williamsburg. Then was assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia for the Seven Days' Battles (Savages Station, Allen's Farm, Malvern Hill.)

The Battle of Crampton's Gap preceded the Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam.) A confederate force of about 500 effectives (including the 16th Georgia) was sent to defend the gap against advance of about 13,000 Union troop and slow their advance towards Sharpsburg. They were unsuccessful in defeating the opponent and suffered heavy casualties, but were able to delay the advance long enough to allow more time for Genl. Robt E Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia to become better organized. Of the 368 members of the 16th GA engaged at South Mountain (Crampton's Gap), 52% were disabled (wounded, killed, captured, or missing.)

Burial is unknown, but many bodies of Confederate soldiers who were killed or died of wounds were removed to this cemetery so I'd like to hope that he too has found a final resting place there.
