LIEUT. BENJAMIN WINGET LOWELL,
22, MISSING OVER FRANCE AUG. 7
CORTAND FLIER
PILOTED B-26 ON
BOMBING MISSION
Wounded During Invasion but Back
In Action - Mother Has Letter
Dated August 7

Lieut. Benjamin Winget Lowell, 22, pilot of a B-26 Marauder, who received severe chest wounds from flak during the invasion of Normandy, and was hospitalized in England for several weeks, is now reported missing in action since August 7 in France, according to a War Department telegram received today by his mother, Mrs. C.A. Lowell, 45 Homer Avenue.

In the invasion of France, Lieutenant Lowell's ship, which he was piloting, ran into a rain of flak. Despite his wounds he kept his ship in formation until the errand was completed and returned to his home base in England where he was forced to make an emergency landing. He was lauded and cited by his commander for his heroic deed.

When he returned to active duty his mother is unable to tell, but she received a letter written August 7, the day the War Department mentioned him as among the missing.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps July 3, 1942. Prior to entering the service he, with his brother Lieut. Spencer Lowell, a supply officer of the Signal Corps stationed in England, operated the Lowell Photo Service. The brothers were well known in Cortland. Both were expert photographers.
