She fought a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in Greenville, SC August 11, 1921, she was the daughter of the late James Young and Mary Alma Crews Wallace and the loving wife of the late Frank Gilreath Kendrick.
Raised in Spartanburg, SC, Sarah was the middle child in a loving family of eleven children.
Sarah graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1938 where she enjoyed playing on the women’s basketball and tennis teams. After high school, she began her career and worked as an executive secretary at the Taylor Colquitt Company where she met and married the love of her life, Frank Gilreath Kendrick, in 1950. Upon the birth of her daughter in 1957, she left the working world to begin her new role as a loving homemaker and mother.
Sarah will be remembered for her outer beauty and grace, and equally for her kindness, faith, friendship, and compassion for others.
She taught Sunday School at Trinity Methodist Church and volunteered at Park Hills Elementary School. She spent countless hours caring for her elderly neighbors and family members through the years.
Her passions included rose gardening and baking, and she was known for her famous pound cakes.
Sarah enjoyed traveling to the mountains of NC for family vacations and attending her Spartanburg High School class reunions. Her musical interests included the champagne music of the Lawrence Welk Show and the smooth crooning of Eddie Arnold. She also enjoyed going to dances at Camp Croft during WWII.
Sarah was predeceased by her beloved husband of 53 years, Frank Gilreath Kendrick; brother, James Y. Wallace, Jr.; and seven sisters, Elizabeth W. Ritchie, Mary W. Macomson, Alma W. McRae, Frances W. Metz, Edna W. Martin, Barbara W. Tabbot, and Margery W. Poteat.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Steve Barnhart, of Concord, NC; her beloved grandson, Bradley Barnhart, of West Lafayette, IN; and sisters, Carolyn Kreuzer of Spartanburg, SC and Martha Nelson and husband Joe of Clinton, SC. She leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
The family wishes to express deepest gratitude to all of the staff members and dear friends at PruittHealth-Towncenter in Harrisburg, NC who provided loving care and support for Sarah during her three-year residency.
