Article: Georgetown, KY., June 16--Late this afternoon Garland Johnson shot and instantly killed Kirby Smith
at Turkeyfoot, this county. Johnson keeps a general store at Turkeyfoot, and it is said that the trouble between the two young men originated over the fact that Smith owed Johnson an account and the latter had refused him further credit. The details as learned are as follows: Between 5 and 6 o'clock Smith accompanied by his three brothers, road up to Johnson's store. They cursed him and, it is said, made threats against him. Johnson came to the door, where Kirby Smith is alleged to have made a motion as if to
draw a weapon, and Johnson fired. Smith fell from his horse dead. Johnson then fired three shots at one of the brothers, but he rolled from his horse and escaped with a slight flesh wound on the arm. Johnson came to town today and gave himself up. He was arraigned before County Judge Bates and his examining trial set for Friday. He was admitted to bail in the sum of $3,000, which he gave. Johnson is a well-known young man, is the son of George Johnson, and is about thirty years of age. He has a wife and one child.
Coroner Paxton held an inquest on the remains of Smith this afternoon. The dead man was also well known. He was about thirty-five years old and left a wife and three children. In Find A Grave.com I believe Kirby
Smith is #28036242. Date of death should be 16 June 1897 and not tombstone death of 5 July 1897.

Please do not confuse this Kirby Smith with the other Kirby Smith b. 1862 died 27 May 1943 Owen Co., KY
son of Robert Jackson Smith and Kizzie Jane Reed. He is buried in Owenton IOOF Cemetery,
Owenton, Owen Co., KY. (similar names and close in birth)
