Singer & Inventor
Nellie Brown Mitchell had a long and successful singing career that led her to invent the phoneterion, "an instrument used to reduce muscular tension in the voice" in the early 1880's. She attended the New England Conservatory of Music and her singing career took her all over the United States and Canada. Retiring from concertizing in the late 1890's, she devoted herself to teaching young African American women in Boston for many years.
