RAY MASON
Ray Frank Mason was born March 7, 1923 at home near Ignacio, Colorado the son of Fred and Ecce Mason. He was the fourth of 6 children.
He attended school at Ignacio and graduated valedictorian of his high school class. After graduating from high school he attended one semester at Fort Lewis College in Hesperus, Colorado and one semester at Central College in McPherson, Kansas.
During World War II he worked farming for Emmett Hott who was a neighbor that lived across the road from his parents homestead. That was the most enjoyable of all of his jobs for his entire life.
He met and married Nellie Gail Savage who was the love of his life. They were married for almost 63 years when Gail passed away.
In February 1947 Ray and Gail moved their family from Colorado to Oregon.
Ray went to work for Crown Zellerbach in early 1947 where he worked until his retirement May 1, 1985. He worked at several different jobs there until he became a millwright, which position he filled until his retirement.
He loved deer hunting and enjoyed fishing. When travelling, he enjoyed looking for wildlife and years after the fact could recall precise locations and numbers of animals seen. He enjoyed recycling scrap meta1s. He would spend days working to break down an electric motor if that was what was required to get the best possible price out of his scrap.
He loved to read and when he would go to an event to watch a grandchild play or participate he would always be sitting reading with no idea what was going on around him.
He was always ready to help anyone in need and did so with Gail's blessings and help.
He would always stand up for what he believed, no matter how many might be opposed or what the cause.
He had very good control of his tongue. Men that worked with him said that they had never heard Ray utter anything near an obscenity. I was in our shop with dad one day when he smashed his thumb with a sledge hammer and he said with emphasis "Oh! Phew!"
He did his best to live his religion. He always carried a New Testament, which Gail had given him, and when he had a break you could find him reading it.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Gail and his eldest son Donald.
He is survived by his sister, Clara Gillespie of Mesa, Arizona, two sons; Carl of Tillamook, Oregon and Robert of Shelton, Washington, 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and one great great Grandchild.
Services will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2014, at 11:00AM at the Oregon City Evangelical Church.
