Charles C. Campbell, born in North Carolina in 1773 (the same year as the Boston Tea Party), had moved to Mississippi by at least 1813 where he married Selah Carter in Natchez on September 1st of that year. Selah and Charles had 7 children born between 1814 and 1834, all in Franklin County, Mississippi.
In 1837, Charles moved his family to the Republic of Texas, settling one mile southwest of Fort Houston. The family at that time consisted of Charles, his wife, a son Malathiel, about 20 years of age; Pamelia (or Permelia), 17; Hulda, 14; Fountain, 10 or 12; and George, aged 4. They also had 2 slaves.
Charles died of natural causes at his home. One week after his death, his wife and 3 of his children were killed at their home by Indians in "The Campbell Massacre" of January 23, 1839.
The survivors who made it to the safety of the fort were Pamelia, (who received a head wound from an arrow), George and the 2 slaves. Another son, Elon, was old enough to have already left the family.
