Henry L. Gibbs, 68, of Conyers, passed away November 11, 2007 of lung disease.

Mr. Gibbs was born August 7, 1939 in Charlton County, Georgia to Arley F. Gibbs and Iduma Tyson Gibbs. He attended Georgia Southwestern College and graduated from Georgia Southern College in 1962. He also earned his Masters of Education from the University of Georgia.

Mr. Gibbs came to Rockdale County in 1962 to teach English at Rockdale County High School. He taught English for several years before moving to the vocational department to teach CVAE, a program that taught job and life skills.

After serving a short time as Assistant Curriculum Director for Rockdale County Schools, he returned to his beloved Rockdale County High School as Principal in 1983. He took great pride in his "Bulldog Family" as they were recognized as a Georgia School of Excellence twice during his tenure. He was honored to serve with dedicated teachers and parents. His devotion to his students was immeasurable.

After 10 years at RCHS, he became Principal of Pine Street Elementary School. He was always happy to see former high school students return as parents. He was especially proud of former students who chose to become educators.

Mr. Gibbs retired in 1997, after 35 years of service to Rockdale County Schools. Because teaching was his passion, Mr. Gibbs continued to educate as he taught GED and ESL classes at DeKalb Tech.

Mr. Gibbs joined First Baptist Church of Conyers in Jan 1963 and was an ordained deacon. He served on the Steering Committee that guided the church's move from Main Street to its present location on Highway 138. He later served on the Steering Committee that managed the planning and construction of the Children's Building at the church.

As always, he took great joy in seeing children grow, learn, and thrive. Mr. Gibbs taught Sunday School at Westbury Nursing Home for 15 years, then taught the Life Sunday School class, a group that brought him much joy and laughter.

Mr. Gibbs was a former member of the Conyers Rotary Club, a past President of the Rockdale Retired Educators and served as a volunteer in Day Surgery at Rockdale Medical Center for 10 years. He also served in the GA National Guard.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rosemary Mayfield Gibbs; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and LTC Walt Stanish of Ft. Bragg, NC; son and daughter-in law, Damon and Catherine Gibbs of Gretna, FL; grandchildren, Walter, Paige, and Beau Stanish, Mary Arden Gibbs; brothers, James and Becky Gibbs, Cordele, Charles and Vicky Gibbs, Douglasville; sister, Nancy and Bob McHugh, Wichita, KS; brother-in-law and sister-in law, Newton and Linda Mayfield of Flovilla, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at First Baptist Church of Conyers at 2 p.m. with Dr. John Wyatt and Rev. Howard Greer officiating; interment will follow at Sandy Creek Cemetery in Flovilla. The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Scot Ward's Harry White Chapel and Wednesday from 1-2pm at First Baptist Church of Conyers.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Children's Ministry, First Baptist Church of Conyers, 2100 Hwy 138, NE, Conyers, GA 30013 or to the Rockdale Retired Educators' Scholarship Fund, 1362 Springwoods Drive, Conyers, GA 30012.
