Ronald D. Gilbert, 63, of Big Prairie, passed away Saturday evening, Sept. 20, 2014, at his home following an extended illness.

Ron was born Jan. 29, 1951, in Ashland, the son of Arbie V. (née Hootman) and Charles C. Gilbert.

On June 19, 1971, he married Candy J. Kovach at Ripley Church of Christ.

Ron worked for many people and companies from his youth. He was last employed at Morton International, where he started as a laborer and eventually was promoted to shipping and receiving foreman and general foreman. He accumulated 23 years until his motorcycle accident in 1995, which forced him into early retirement.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints, Wooster Ward, where he served as Sunday school president. He served as the second counselor to the bishop for five years and numerous other callings.

He also was a member of the Foresters and had helped the youth as a coach for Little League for a few years.

He resided in the Nashville area since 1963. He and his wife built their house on County Road 316 in Ripley Township in 1975. After the house fire in 2010, they had a new home again.

He served with the Nashville Fire Department for more than 13 years.

Ron had been in Boy Scouts as a youth and was a dedicated leader for more than 40 years. He served as scoutmaster for Troop 356 and Troop 76 at the same time for many years. Later, he became committee chairman and also served on the district level as Killbuck district advancement chairman for Holmes and Wayne counties.

Although the Eagle rank had eluded him as a boy, he was very instrumental in helping 22 boys receive their Eagle in Troop 356, including his son, Troop 356's first Eagle Scout from Nashville, and more than 30 from Troop 76 at his church. He had helped more than 250 Eagles by the end of his nine years as district chairman.

He remained active in the Boy Scouts of America from the age of 11, continuing to be active in two Boy Scout troops, serving as a district commissioner and adviser on the district advancement committee until his death.

He had made it to Life Scout, but never got his Eagle Scout award, although he did receive the Silver Beaver and was a former Scouter of the Year.

He started Troop 356 back up as a youth and again as an adult and served as scoutmaster for that troop and later was asked to become scoutmaster of Troop 76 for his church in Wooster. Ron loved the Scout program and to see the boys advance to the rank of Eagle.

He loved his family and he always was willing to go see them or take care of them. He was well known by many people, but often remarked "who was that?" It seemed as though everyone knew Ron but he would admit that he had trouble remembering who they were.

He always was riding motorcycles as a young man until his accident in 1995, which left him paralyzed from the chest down. Ron loved the outdoors, hunting, camping and just being outside under God's beautiful creation. He had various collections, from Scouting memorabilia to coins from the mint, a few stamps, baseball and football cards and tins.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Candy Jo Gilbert, are his daughter, Christol J. Neels of Big Prairie; and son, Brandon L. (Barbara) Gilbert of Pickerington. He also is survived by brothers, Duane (Sandy) Gilbert of Mansfield, Stanley (Carole) Gilbert of Big Prairie and Clayton (Marge) Gilbert of Millersburg; sisters, Lola (Harold) Yeater of Nashville and Darlene (Dave) Kennedy of Wooster; and eight grandchildren, Christol's four children and Brandon's four children.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother; a brother, Darrell of Ashland; two nephews, Robert and Kenneth; mother-in-law; father-in-law and both maternal and paternal grandparents.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, at Alexander Funeral Home in Millersburg. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, at the funeral home with Bishop David Benfield officiating. Burial will be at Nashville Cemetery, Nashville. (T-G 09/2/14)
