Waynesville- Jerry Ensley Messer, age 79, passed away Thursday, Sept 18, 2014 at Maggie Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

A lifelong resident of Haywood County. He was the son of the late John Avery and Violet Wright Messer. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Erwin Messer, who died in 2000; a daughter, Carolyn Robinson; two sons Gerald Messer and David Messer; a brother Kenneth Messer, James Harold Messer. He was a member and a deacon of Canton Freewill Baptist Church and serviced in the North Carolina National Guard. He retired in 1984 from Daniel Construction Company.

He is survived a wife Sue Ingel Messer, a son and his wife, Mark and Jennifer Messer of Wilmington, NC; a sister, Juanita Stamey of Canton; and three brothers, Ralph Messer and his wife Lou of Canton, Johnny Messer and his wife Geraldine of Canton, James Messer and his wife, Frances of Jacksonville, FL, a sister in law, Susie of Waynesville; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 21, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Brian Byrd officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 p.m., Saturday, September 21, 2014 at Wells Funeral Home in Canton.
