Helen attended Berwick Academy and graduated from Radcliffe College in 1901. She spent five years in South Africa and taught at the Cape Town Huguenot School, where she learned the customs of the Boers. When she returned to the US, she resided at Cambridge, MA from 1900–10, before returning to the Doe family homestead at Rollinsford. Helen enjoyed making long visits to her Haven relatives in Portsmouth. She was extremely independent and rode a motorcycle.
