In 1879 he was involved as an umpire in the Sydney Riot when the touring England cricket team was playing New South Wales. The crowd didn't like his decision to dismiss Dave Gregory, who was then the Australian captain, and stormed the playing area. Fascinatingly, the other umpire at the game who finally resolved the issue was Edmund Barton, who 22 years later became Australia's first Prime Minister.
He umpired the third Test ever in 1879, then in February 1882 he played his only Test and umpired a later test in that same series. An amazing swapping of roles that would never be allowed now!
He died of tuberculosis aged 27 but managed to cram a lot into a short life.
