James Stewart "Gene" Caldwell, 79, of Campobello, SC, died Saturday, March 11, 2006 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

A native of Spartanburg County, he was the son of the late John and Viddie (Stewart) Caldwell and husband of Cleo (Atkins) Caldwell.

A retired farmer, he was a member of Motlow Creek Baptist Church and served in the US Navy in WWII at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

He was predeceased by a son, Timothy S. Caldwell.

Also surviving is a son, Phillip C. Caldwell and wife Laura of Campobello; four sisters, Ina Harris of Utah, Kathleen Hall, Lucille Humphries and Floy Hines all of Spartanburg; four grandchildren, Alician Sprouse and husband Kerry, Chad Caldwell and wife Amanda, Matthew, and Joshua Caldwell; and three great grandchildren Jon-Christopher, Jeremey Graham and Hannah Sprouse.

The family received friends 2:00-4:00 pm, Sunday, March 12, 2006 at Motlow Creek Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 am Monday, March 13, 2006 at Motlow Creek Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Terry Rainey and Pastor John Smith.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.
