GEORGE D. RICHARDSON was born October 7, 1833, on the same farm where he now resides, on the upper Brandenburg and Union Star Road, seven miles southwest of Brandenburg. He was first lieutenant, during the war, of Company D, of the First Kentucky Cavalry, with which he served from October 1, 1861, to July 8, 1864, when he was captured with a major part of Morgan's command but was immediately paroled. He was at Perryville and Corinth, besides a number of minor battles, and in almost one constant skirmish.
His father, Daniel S. Richardson, was born in Whitehall, N.Y., near the head of Lake Champlain. He was a farmer and high sheriff, as well as having been the first representative of his county in the Legislature of his State. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and a son of David M. Richardson, who was born in England, and after spending some time in New York moved in 1809 to Kentucky, and located in Hardin County, of which he was one of the early settlers. He, as well as his son, was a magistrate and a member of the court of claims of his county. Daniel S. Richardson was twice married; first, in 1820, to Miss Mary Hurd, daughter of Zedick Hurd, of Meade County. From this union sprang five sons and four daughters, of whom Salmon S., Eliza (Woolfolk), Louis R., George D., Melissa (Richardson) and Sarah E. (Richardson) still survive. His second marriage took place, in 1847, to Mrs. Hester (Simmons) Woolfolk. They had one son, William H. (deceased).
George D. Richardson was married, October 2, 1865, to Miss Maria, daughter of Simmons and Eliza (Jennings) Watkins, of Louisville. To them have been born Jessie B., George D., Henry W., J. Allen, Simmons W., and Salmon S.; besides their own children they have reared two nephews, James F. Smith and George G. Smith. Mr. Richardson's educational advantages were limited, though he had for a time a teacher a man now famous as being the father of our present governor to wit: John Knott. He had some assistance in starting in life and has become the owner of 640 acres of land. He is a believer in the doctrines of the Episcopal Church, though not a member. He is a charter member of the Masonic fraternity, and in politics is a Democrat, having served for eight years as a magistrate and two as deputy sheriff of his county.
