Harvey Harold Nichols, 82, of Tehachapi passed away Feb. 7 after many years of illness and his final week in the Lancaster Community Hospital after a stroke.

Harvey was born Jan. 30, 1924 in Hanford and was raised in Fresno and Bell, graduating from Bell High School with a letter for track. Joining the Army, he was in the 101st Single Battalion as a cryptograph clerk serving in New Guinea, Layte, the Asiatic Pacific and the Southern Philippines. He served three years and 11 months, receiving many medals including the Bronze Star.

Harvey was a truck driver most of his life while living in Downey before moving to Tehachapi eight and a half years ago.

He loved fishing, which he taught his children, Tom and Nanci, when they were young. Harvey was a good bowler and golfer as well as an artist with a lot of imagination He helped his wife Mary Ellen with her work for March of Dimes for 27 years.

Harvey was very proud of his German heritage and could speak German fluently. He liked to make others laugh and had a nickname for everyone. Harvey was always willing to help others during their times of need.

Harvey is survived by his wife Mary Ellen; son, Thomas Joe Nichols and wife Paula; daughter, Nanci Janette Buff and husband Jerry; grandchildren, Thomas Joe, Jr. Nichols and wife Geraldine; Tammy Leah Sittig and husband Eric; Jessy Joseph Lee Buff; and Nicole Joleelen Buff Lofton and husband Randy; great-grandchildren, Jessica Mary Ellen Nichols, Caleb Benjamin Thomas Sittig, Briana Rose Sittig, Skylee Danielle Sittig and Nevaeh Lynn Lofton; two nephews, Bernard Leland, Jr. and Timothy John; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip Nichols and Marie Barbara Bittier-Nichols; brother, Bernard Leland; two nephews, Benjamin Phillip and Taylor Leland; grandson, Jason Thomas and a granddaughter, Danielle Marie; and several aunts and uncles. Funeral services with military honors were held at Todd Memorial Chapel in Pomona on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
