Esther M. (Brei) Patterson, 100, former long-time resident of New Ulm, died peacefully at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye on Saturday, September 13, 2014.
A Christian service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 20, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held at the church beginning at 9:30 a.m. Internment will take place in the Lutheran Cemetery following church service. Pastor Donald Sutton will officiate.
Esther is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and JoAnn (Tomaschko) Patterson of Burnsville; two sisters, Melda Ohland of Gibbon and Leona Lehman of Fairmont; and one brother, William Brei Jr. of New Ulm. Five grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive her. Preceding her in death were her husband Louis, son Donald, brothers Edwin Brei and Raymond Brei, and sisters Ruth Knittel and Helen Bloedel.
Esther was born on September 29, 1913 in Hanover, Kansas to William and Minnie (Munsterman) Brei. She married Louis (Pat) Patterson on September 1, 1935 in Mission, South Dakota and lived in Ainsworth, Nebraska for a short time. They relocated to New Ulm in June 1936 and were members of St. Paul’s until their deaths. Pat died on October 9, 1995.
Esther and Pat lived in New Ulm most of their married lives. They moved to Jackson and Kalamazoo, Michigan during World War II, where Pat was employed by the Air Force as an inspector of radio equipment, returning to New Ulm in 1945. Their younger son, Donald, was born on July 22, 1944 in Jackson, Michigan. He died on December 10, 1985 at the age of 41.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Divine Providence Community Home or donor’s choice.
