Son of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire and 7th Baron Clifford, and Lady Elizabeth Christiane Hervey Cavendish.

Educated at Harrow, he entered the Navy as a midshipman, and received a medal for the capture of a convoy at The Bay of Rosas in 1809 and operations off the Italian coast through 1811. He was often mentioned in The Gazette for his courage in expeditions. He was knighted in 1830 and created a Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod in 1832.

On October 20, 1813 he wed Lady Elizabeth Frances Townshend, sister of John, 4th Marquis of Townshend. They were the parents of William John Cavendish Clifford. He was patron of the arts and acquired a large collection of paintings and sculpture. He died at his residence in the House of Lords.
