Derrick lived in Bonanza, Oregon with his parents and siblings.
He became separated from his father and grandfather while hunting for a Christmas tree in the Rocky Point area of the Winema National Forest in Klamath County, Oregon on December 5, 1998.

Extensive air and ground searches yielded few clues to Derrick's whereabouts. A severe snow storm hit the area the afternoon Derrick was reported missing.

An adult male was seen driving a black Honda in the Rocky Point area on December 5. The individual reportedly asked for directions.

A witness reported seeing an adult male struggling with a young boy near the Rocky Point area.

In November 2002, investigators announced that they had identified a suspect in Derrick's case.
The suspect confessed to murdering and burying Derrick near Silver Falls State Park in the Silverton, Oregon area.
He later recanted the confession.

No trace of Derrick has ever been found.
