Funeral services for Mr. James William "Jake" Spears, age 87 of Alexandria, formerly of Ruston will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, September 22, 2014 at Owens Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.

Former Ruston businessman and civic leader, James William “Jake” Spears, Sr., passed away September 19th in Alexandria, LA. Jake, as he loved to be called, was owner and operator of several businesses in North Louisiana. He especially enjoyed serving people through his funeral homes and insurance agency for many years. Jake was a member of Northside Church of Christ, where he regularly led singing, and several civic organizations. He was active in the Lions Club, which he joined in 1949. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was in the American Legion and participated in local politics.

Mr. Spears was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years: Jo Ann Spears, on May 31, 2014; his parents: Grayson Lee Spears and Olive Lillian Rockett; sisters: Opal Spears, Florein Keech, Barbara Roberson and a brother Ted Spears.

He is survived by his children: Ruth Ann and husband, Bob Westmoreland of Leesville, LA, James W. “Bill” Spears and wife Jean of Pineville, LA, Gordon M. Spears and wife Traci of Conway, AR and Scott W. Spears and wife Lisa of Searcy, AR. Survivors also include his brothers: Grayson “El” Spears, Paul Spears, Jerry Spears and Donnie Spears and sister: Evelyn Hudson. He had fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be: William Spears, Mike Cole, Chris Reeks,
John Cole, and Bob Westmoreland. Visitation will be helf from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Owens Memorial Chapel in Ruston.
