-------------------------------------
The Late Mrs Abigail Dean -- Mrs Dean died at her residence in Rockport, August 5th 1881, in the 86th year of her age. She was born at Lenox, Mass, March 11th 1796, came to Ohio with her father, Joshua Taylor, who settled with his family in Dover, in the summer of 1815. Abigail was married to Chester Dean, March 15th 1818, with whom she lived in the Township of Rockport till the time of his death, November 2nd 1838. Since then she has lived on the same farm, having been a resident of Rockport over 63 years.

She was the mother of nine children, seven sons and two daughters; Mary Ann (wife of AJ Hussey), Lucius, Horace, John, Marcella (wife of WD Kelley), Datus, Oscar, Jerry W, and Charles. Charles, John, Marcella and Oscar are all residents of Kelley's Island, Jerry W of New London, Wis, and the others of Rockport, excepting Datus, who died at Jamestown, Mich in 1875. The surviving children were all present at her funeral.

At the death of her husband, she was left with a family of small children, the oldest, Mary Ann, under 20 and the youngest, Charles C, not four years of age, and by good management, rigid economy and steadfast determination was enabled to keep her family together with the assistance of her children until they were grown up and able to make homes for themselves.

She had a very retentive memory, retaining her mental faculties to the last. About six years ago she lost her sight which was not regained, and the last two years she was confined to her room and most of the time to her bed. She was the last survivor of 11 children of her father's family, being the 10th child.

Abigail's legacy was chronicled in: Memorial to the Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve -- Abigail was the second wife of Chester Dean and was just 43 years old when Chester died in 1838, leaving her with nine children. She was able to keep her family together and give them a fair education. Their principal food at first was fish caught in the river (probably the Rocky River, just west of Cleveland). They used sassafras and other herbs for tea. After a while they were able to procure a quarter of a pound of tea, which was used only on state occasions, and lasted a whole year. She made her own candles, and if the supply gave out, would resort to pine knots and hickory bark. Money was very scarce, and every penny was hoarded for freeing their home from debt and for taxes, which were about $2.50 a year. She was fondly called 'Aunt Nabby'.

Her daughter, Marcella married WD Kelley in 1856, but died shortly thereafter. Her son, John Dean, featured prominently in the history of Kelley's Island.
