Stephen Van Rensselaer Ford was the second of eight children born to Silas Earl Ford and Amanda Hedden.

Van, as he was known to his friends and family, at the age of 22 married Mary Abrams (1836 - 27 Aug 1875) on 12 Oct 1858. They had four children:
Jennie C. (died young)
Frank Hall (died young)
Mary A. (10 Jul 1868 - 11 Mar 1940), m Robert Mayhew
Lillian K. (7 Apr 1872 - 5 Oct 1946), m George Andrews
Secondly, he married Jennie Samson, of Middleburg, NY, on 12 Oct 1876 in Cornwall, VT. They had one child, Stanly Morton (b 15 Jul 1888).

Van R. Ford was a lay minister, inventor, and manufacturer. In 1865, he organized the firm of Ide & Ford, which manufactured linen collars in Troy, NY. He was the inventor of the mangler and paper collars. In 1872, he moved to Saratoga Springs, NY. In 1891, he was the music editor of the Methodist Book concern, in New York City, NY. (Hannible C. As a composer and song writer particularly of children’s music, he was published by the Methodist Episcopal Church. He had the following pieces published:
1891, Junior League Songster, edited by S. V. R. Ford.
1891, Melodies for Little People, by S. V. R. Ford.
1894, Imperial Songs for Sunday Schools, edited by Jesse L. Hurlbut and Stephen V. R. Ford.

Battle Hymn Composer Dead.
New York, N. Y. - Stephen Van Rensselaer Ford, author, editor, composer and critic, a member of one of the oldest families in the central part of the state, died at his home here. He was 74 years old. For many years Mr. Ford was connected with the Methodist Book concern in an editorial capacity, and had been assistant editor of the Methodist Review.
