Leo Dale Bailey, 94, of McConnelsville, passed away at 5:07 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, at Highland Oaks after a long illness with Alzheimer’s and Prostate cancer.

He was born on January 9, 1920, in Windsor Township, Stockport, Ohio, a son of the late Emmett S. and Bessie Porter Bailey.

Mr. Bailey played varsity basketball at Windsor High School, and played on several independent basketball and baseball teams following graduation. He loyally attended Windsor Alumni Banquets. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1944-46 aboard the USS Nashville and received five ribbons and one battle star. After the war, Dale trained under the GI Bill in auto-mechanics at the A.W. “Gus” Abel Garage and later co-owned, with his wife, Jean Louise, the L&L Motor Sales in McConnelsville. They, also, at one time co-managed the roller skating rink north of McConnelsville. Both later became employees of Morgan Local Schools. Dale served as security deputy in the AEP Recreation Area for several summers and enjoyed water sports and entertained many with rides, water skis, and surf boarding on the Muskingum River and on vacations at Russell’s Point on Indian Lake. His boat was the “Sonja II.” Dale’s real joy was his auto mechanics class at Morgan High School. Mention any name and he’d say, “I had him in class down at Morgan – he was a good boy.”

Dale married Jean Louise Sims, May 17, 1941, and they lived in the Sims Homestead until she passed away March 19, 2004. They had one daughter, Sonja N. Reed, who passed away November 11, 2005, and a son-in-law, Larry E. Reed, who passed away September 5, 2007. Dale was also preceded in death by three sisters, infant, Oleta Bailey, Evelyn Yoho, Ina Walker; one brother, Don L. Bailey; and niece, Linda Taylor.

Following the loss of his immediate family, Dale enjoyed the support, understanding, and fellowship of the Stockport Church of Christ. He appreciated their faithful visits to the rest home as well as visits from veterans organizations and Masonic Lodges. He was a member of Corinthian Lodge F&AM 111 of McConnelsville and the Scottish Rite of Cambridge and enjoyed visiting at Clemente Amitie Lodge 285 in Reinersville. He was retired from Morgan Local Schools.

Surviving are grandson, Larry E. Reed II; great-grandson, Jesse (Mirisa) Reed; and great-great-grandchildren, Austin, Elise and Kaydon Reed. He is also survived by one sister, Eva Jean Glenn; two sisters-in-law, Bettie Bailey and Elsie Sims; one nephew, David L. Bailey; and nieces, Imogene Karr, Eleanor Long, Rose Davis, Marcia Wittenberg, Kathy Finkbeiner and Patty Hoover; as well as close friends, Tim McCoy, Fred Lynn, Mike Oliver, Harold French, Richard Strode, John Taylor and dedicated guardian, Ronald Welsh.

Friends may call on the family from 2 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Matheney Funeral Home in McConnelsville with Masonic services following at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, at the Matheney Funeral Home in McConnelsville with Evang. Rex McDonald officiating.

Burial will follow in the Stockport Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Stockport Church of Christ, Stockport, OH 43787. Appreciation is extended to the entire staff at Highland Oaks, especially the Alzheimer’s wing that took care of him for four years and to the Generations Wing that attended to all his needs during his declining months. Church, Military, and Fraternal Organizations, as well as friends and family always remembered special days, holidays, and birthdays and Dale was so pleased. Thank you to Genesis Hospice caregivers, musicians and Pastor for their spiritual gifts.
