Joanne worked at the University of Washington in Seattle and later at General Electric in Richland, Washington where she met and fell in love with her future husband, Bob Mills. Bob and Joanne were married on August 20, 1962.
They soon departed Joanne's beloved eastern Washington as Bob's career path lead to jobs in Decatur, Illinois, New Haven, Connecticut, Beloit, Wisconsin, New York City, London, England and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
In April of 1964 they were blessed with the birth of their first son, Robert Christopher Mills; 16 months later, in August of 1965, a second son, Timothy, joined the family.
In 1972 Bob was offered and accepted a position as President of the International Stanley Corporation in Omaha. At that point, Joanne notified Bob that it was time for the family to settle down and that Omaha was going to be their home for a while.
Bob and Joanne bought a home in Omaha's historic Dundee neighborhood and quickly forged many wonderful friendships that continued throughout the rest of her life.
Joanne lost the love of her life when Bob was diagnosed with cancer and died in March of 1976 at 41 years of age. In spite of the loss, Joanne preserved and poured her heart and soul into raising her two sons, both of whom graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Once the boys were raised and off to college, Joanne went back to work, first with United Arts Omaha and then with the Omaha Symphony, and finally with what was then the newly-opened Westin Hotel in downtown Omaha.
Joanne loved the arts and volunteered in many projects throughout her life. She was active in Countryside Community Church in Omaha where she made many of her dearest friends. Joanne was healthy most of her life, but in the end, battled cancer and other health issues. She made a conscious decision to enter hospice and died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends.
