Jimmy Horton, 81, of Clovis, NM died Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at his home in Clovis. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, September 20, 2014 at The Chapel, 1500 Thornton, with Tom Schuj officiating. Burial will follow at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens with military honors by US Navy Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Brandon Jacobs, John Jacobs, J.R. Jacobs, Chris Bryant, Neil Callender, and Russell Muffley. Honorary pallbearers will be the Foxy Coffee group and friends.

Jimmy Horton was born on March 2, 1933 in the back of the little store in Pleasant Hill, New Mexico that his father, E.H. "Monk" Horton and his mother, Daisy May Jester Horton owned and lived in for a few short years. Soon, Monk and Daisy moved Jim and their three other sons a mile north of Pleasant Hill where he farmed and raised livestock until 1948, when the family moved into Clovis.

Jim and his brothers, Hershel, Bob, and Terry, attended Pleasant Hill Schools until the school closed after Jim's freshman year. He then transferred to Texico High School and loved running track and playing basketball for the Wolverines until he graduated in 1951. Jimmy felt so very honored to be offered a full basketball scholarship to ENMU upon high school graduation, but he felt compelled to join the US Navy and served our country during the Korean War on both the USS Princeton and the USS Yorktown.

Soon after returning home to Curry County, Jimmy became reacquainted with a beautiful Clovis girl whose levi jacket he'd once thrown up on top of a street light and made furious! Deciding to make it up to her, he asked her on a date. Less than six months later, Jim and Anne Wallace were married! During their 59 year marriage, they had one child - a daughter, Teresa Marie, who adored them both very much.

Although, Jim Horton enjoyed softball, basketball, football - he loved his Clovis Wildcats and served on the "chain gang" for many years - his greatest love in sports was golf. Until his health declined, he was on the Colonial Park Golf Course almost every day telling silly jokes to all his buddies.

When he wasn't playing golf, he devoted nearly 30 years of his life to providing people in the Clovis area with trustworthy, dependable, insurance through Allstate Insurance Company. He loved helping others, and even when he couldn't provide someone with an insurance policy, he would try to show love and compassion in other ways. Jimmy's office secretary used to say that when his insurance office was located behind First Baptist Church, homeless folks would stop in asking for help when the church was closed. She used to watch him quietly place money in a needy person's hand as he or she left his office.

Jim and Anne were faithful members of Central Christian Church for many years. He taught the College Age Sunday School Classes, served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, and Chairman of the Board of the Church. In recent years they have been members of the 21st Street Church of Christ. Jim and Anne raised Teresa and their beloved grandchildren, Abbye, John, and Brandon, to love Jesus and keep their faith in God, come what may.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, E.H. "Monk" Horton and Daisy May Jester Horton, and his brothers, Hershel, Bobby, and Dr. Terry Horton. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Anne Wallace Horton, his daughter, Teresa Marie Horton Jacobs and son-in-law, J.R. Jacobs. His three grandchildren - granddaughter, Abbye Marie Jacobs Callender (Neil), and grandsons, John Jacobs (Kenda Pierce Jacobs) and his twin Brandon Jacobs (Zandi Carpenter Jacobs). Last but not least, Great Papa Jim's nine great-grandchildren, Toby, Madison, Caden, Ryleigh, Mayci, Logan, Xander, Colten, and Jaxon.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Christian Children's Home, 1356 Hwy 236, Portales, NM 88130.

The family will be at Tereesa Jacob's house, 2728 Harrison in Clovis.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Muffley Funeral Home (575) 762-4435 www.muffleyfuneralhome.com.
