A native of Sampson County, he was the son of the late William Hughes and Lona Godwin Strickland. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, North Spartanburg, S.C., and was a retired employee with Southern Railway. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in Korea.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sept. 14 at Lanford-Gwinn Mortuary Chapel by the Rev. Al Phillips and Richard Chapman. Interment followed at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Bridges Strickland; a daughter, Kelly Cattaneo of Peoria, Ariz.; a sister, Opal Colville of Dunn; a brother, Robert Strickland of Raleigh; two granddaughters; and one greatgrandchild.
