Benjamin Frank Hess, 84, of Amarillo died Monday, Sept. 15, 2014. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Martin Road Chapel. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road.

Benjamin Frank Hess, 84, of Amarillo died Monday, Sept. 15, 2014.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Martin Road Chapel. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road.

Ben was born Aug. 30, 1930, in Alexandria, La., to Benjamin and Lonnie Hess. He graduated from Bunkie High School and proudly served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War. Ben married his wife, Charlotte, on March 1, 1953, in Amarillo.

He worked for Swift for 27 years and then owned Gentle Ben's Tractor Service in Amarillo. Ben was a hardworking man who loved the outdoors. He always planted a big garden and raised two bottle-fed calves with his grandchildren. He also loved to work on old tractors and go to farm sales.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Brent Sandlin.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte; a daughter, Peggy Sandlin and husband Monte; a son, Rodney Hess and wife Barbara; and a granddaughter, Bailey Hess, all of Amarillo.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Make-A-Wish Foundation, 411 S. Fillmore St., Amarillo, TX 79101; or Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
