Richard Alton Vorwerk passed away Friday afternoon August 28, 2009, from complications resulting from a fall on his daily walk. Visitation will be at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Sunday, August 30, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 31, 2009, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Taylor. Richard, the son of Richard Max Vorwerk and Julia Gonzenbach Vorwerk, was born November 29, 1916, on his parents' farm near Coupland in East Travis County. He grew up helping his parents on their farm and attended a two room school house in Rices Crossing. Texas, riding his horse to school. He graduated from Taylor High School in 1935. In the late 1930's he moved to Austin and worked various jobs during the day and attended night school taking accounting classes. It was during this time that he met and married the "love of his life", Elizabeth Hope Wiebe in 1939. They were married in 1939. During World War II he worked in a defense industry plant in Austin and after the war joined Southern Union Gas Company. He worked as an accountant-auditor for Southern Union for 35 years in various locations through- out the southwest until his retirement in the early 1980's. He and Elizabeth returned to their central Texas roots and resided in Taylor, Texas. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 61 years, Elizabeth; sister Irene M. Schroeder and brother James W. Vorwerk. Richard is survived by his sister, Laverne Tumlinson and family; son, Richard A. Vorwerk Jr.; and daughter, Judy Beth Hetherington; son-in-law, Brian Hetherington; granddaughters, Julia Roadman and husband Charlie and Helen Huckaba and husband Cy; great- granddaughters, Anna and Tess Roadman, Lillie and Penny Huckaba; niece Brenda Gola; and nephew, Wayne Schroeder; and many other relatives and friends. Pallbearers will be Glen Vorwerk, Wilbert Vorwerk, Michael Miller, James Davidson, Wayne Schoeder and Wilburn Rust. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Richard's name to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Taylor or to your favorite charity.
