Scott Schmitz, age 49, of Underwood, ND, died Monday, April 30, 2012 at his home surrounded by his wife and family.

Funeral Services will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 2nd at St. Bonaventure’s Catholic Church in Underwood with Rev. Frank J. Schuster officiating. Interment will follow in the Underwood Cemetery with honors provided by the ND National Guard Military Funeral Honors team.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. Tuesday at Goetz Funeral Home in Underwood with a prayer service at 7:30 P.M.

Scott was born August 20, 1962 in Vermillion, SD to Raymond & Kathleen Schmitz. He attended Elk Point, SD public schools where he graduated from high school. Scott enlisted in the Army and Air Force National Guard in 1980 and was separated in 1984. He worked various jobs in South Dakota which included owning and operating a restaurant in Sioux Falls for a short time. Scott moved to Minot, ND in 1992.

On Sept. 25, 1999, he was united in marriage to Leanne Hoiby in Minot. They moved to Mesa, AZ where they lived and worked for over 12 years. Scott & Leanne returned to North Dakota in May 2011. He was recently employed with Headwaters Inc. working at local power plants. Scott loved sports, including golfing, fishing, and watching NASCAR. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Leanne of Underwood; stepdaughter, Chastity (JD) Aasheim of Underwood; stepson, Mark Dean of Sioux Falls, SD; his father, Raymond (Linda) Schmitz of River Land Estates, SD: his mother, Kathleen (Randy) Balzer of W. Burlington, IA; one sister, Teresa (Tom) Headstream of Abilene, TX; four brothers, Dan (Pam) of S. Sioux City, IA, Larry (Tammy) of Sioux City, IA, Rick of Cedar Rapids, IA, & Joe of W. Burlington, IA; three step-grandchildren, Alexis, Dylan, & Allie of Underwood; his paternal grandmother, Bonita Schmitz of Elk Point, SD; and numerous nieces & nephews.

Scott was preceded in death by one sister (Ann), his paternal grandfather (George Schmitz), & maternal grandparents (Tom McGonigle and Eleanor Clausing).
