Betty Jean Neuber Horton, 83, widow of Dana F. Horton formerly of Ulster and Greene’s Landing, Pa., passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital, Towanda.
Betty was born in Williamsport, Pa., on October 11, 1930 the daughter of Jacob and Belvia Hunsinger Neuber. She was a graduate of Dushore High School and in early years was employed by Sayre Lingerie and as a switchboard operator for the Commonwealth Telephone Company first in Dushore and later in Towanda. On October 11, 1956, she married Dana F. Horton at St John’s Lutheran Church in Sayre.
Betty was later employed by the Athens High School cafeteria and by the P&C Market in Athens.
Betty and Dana owned and operated their dairy farm on Ghent Hill for many years and drove school bus for the Athens Area School District for many years.
Betty was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Towanda, Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 76, Towanda, and was a life member of the Sheshequin-Ulster Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. Betty was very active in the Bradford County Republican Women’s organization for many years. Betty and Dana enjoyed spending time with their family and traveling throughout the United States during their retirement. Betty enjoyed collecting recipes and cookbooks and organizing and cooking dinners for various events at the Sheshequin-Ulster Fire Hall.
Surviving are her beloved three sons and daughters-in-law: Richard D. and Mary Horton of Sayrem, Robert C. and Lisa Horton of Towanda, Roger L. and Sharon Horton of Towanda; 11 grandchildren: SSG. Chad Garrison and wife Jennifer, Sarah Horton, Katrina Kapichok and husband Guy, Raelyn Horton, Rachelle Horton, Jacob Horton, Amanda Horton, Kiersten Horton, Roger Horton Jr., Brock Horton, Christopher Horton; eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Janet Wieziolowski of Elmira, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, many good friends and her best friend, Melvia Stoothoff.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Dana on July 3, 2009.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 908 S. Main St. Towanda, Pa., with Pastor Jira Albers officiating.
Interment will follow in the Sheshequin Valley Cemetery, Sheshequin Twp., Pa.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa., and also on Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Towanda. Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 76 will hold a service of remembrance Friday at 5:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church Building Fund, 908 S. Main St., Towanda, PA 18848 in Betty Jean Horton’s memory.
