Retha Marie Carr Thompson, 84, of Piney River, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her beloved family on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014 after struggling with an intense illness. She was born Feb. 5, 1930 in Camden-on-Gauley, W.Va., the daughter of the late Charlie Maywood Carr and Leah Agnes Clifton Carr.
Retha was a graduate of Fleetwood High School and Virginia Commercial College and a retired employee of the Nelson County School System. She was a founding member of the Nelson County High School Band Boosters, a life member of the Roseland Rescue Squad and a member of the Roseland Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a member of Piney River Baptist Church.
Retha was a passionate and kind individual to all of God’s creatures, especially her three “fur babies,” Stormy, Inky and Forrest. She was an accomplished seamstress and endearingly referred to as Jr.’s “left-handed squaw.” She will forever be fondly remembered for her spirited style and grace.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, William H. Thompson “Jr.”; two daughters, Karen T. Barrett and her husband, Tim, and Leigh Thompson, all of Piney River; one beloved granddaughter, Kaitlyn P. Houchens, of UVa., Charlottesville; four nephews, one niece and numerous other loving relatives and friends.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to all of the coordinators and nurses of the Hospice of the Piedmont, especially Cindy Sinchak, RN, and Dr. William Hammond of Martha Jefferson Medical Associates for their care and compassion shown during Retha’s final days.
A funeral service was conducted Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014 at Piney River Baptist Church by Rev. Jason Canipe, Rev. W.T. Wright and Rev. John Campbell. Burial followed in Jonesboro Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Pkwy., #300, Charlottesville, VA 22911 or to Piney River Baptist Church, 1190 Woodson Rd., Lowesville, VA 22967.
