A celebration of the life of Jack Newt Adkisson will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 19, 2014 in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 at the funeral home.

Jack passed away on Monday, September 15, 2014. He was 79.

Born in Tahlequah, OK on November 13, 1934 to Thomas and Mayme (Phillips) Adkisson, Jack was reared and educated in the Sulphur area.

Jack excelled in sports during his school years and attended the Oklahoma School for the Deaf in Sulphur, OK.

Jack lived in Tahlequah before moving to Muskogee and beginning his working career at Royal Casket Company and eventually retiring from General Dynamics.

In May of 1965, Jack married Julia Tillman in a ceremony at St. Paul Methodist Church in Muskogee and their union was gifted with three children.

Jack was a wonderful father and husband but when grandchildren came along, Jack discovered the joy of being a Papa Jack.

He doted on his grandchildren and was their greatest supporter, attending all their sporting events and activities. Jack even won an award for best grandparent twice! He even had his own shirt with “Papa” on the back that he would wear to the games.

Although Jack had the physical challenge of a hearing impairment, he had no handicap. He was quite capable of living his life to the fullest and with gusto, never feeling sorry for himself or allowing anyone else to either.

Jack was great at many things, bowling and basketball were two of his favorite sports. He played for the Tulsa Silence, a semi-pro basketball team and was named as the Top Deaf Bowler in the state of Oklahoma. Jack traveled all over the United States participating in bowling tournaments.

While Jack had many pastimes, his passion was fishing. He loved trout and crappie fishing and he greatly enjoyed his annual fishing trip to Marval Trout Camp in Gore every fall.

Perhaps the only other passion to rival his love of fishing would be his love for the Sooners. Jack was a life-long, loyal Oklahoma University fan, always cheering on his beloved Sooners.

This loving father and grandfather will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched.

Jack is survived by his children Janell Syverson and husband Jon, Jacque Snodgrass and husband Chris and Jody Alvarado;

grandchildren Daniel Colquitt and wife Angie, Cody Colquitt, Lillie Ann Syverson, Faith Breeann Syverson, Jack Conrad Syverson; great grandchildren Americus, Julia, Phallon, Gentry, Neena, Aden and Cambree Colquitt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 39 years, Julia Adkisson, brothers Edgar, Thomas and Clarence, sisters Gladys, Lorene, Irene, Callie, Faye and Mayme.
