C. J. Yorath, Gas Company Head, Passes
Born in Cardiff, Wales, Mr. Yorath was the son of William and Mary Yorath. He received his education and early training in Cardiff, where he attended the famous Welsh university, later being articled to James Allan, Cardiff engineering contractor.
His first municipal appointment was to the engineering staff of the Cardiff city engineer, W. Harper, where he obtained considerable practical experience in city development work, including sewage, electrification of street railway, road making, bridge building, cost keeping, organization and supervision of administrative detail.
After five years at this work in Cardiff, Mr. Yorath went to London as deputy engineer and surveyor of the borough of Acton, where he was responsible for the design and supervision of many large engineering works and civic improvements.
In 1913 he was appointed city commissioner of Saskatoon, where his work was chiefly of a reorganization nature. He was largely occupied in helping municipalities out of the financial difficulties they had fallen into during the real estate boom. He had hoped to be able in a new country to apply some of the best known principles of town planning, of which he had made an intensive study.
In 1921 he was appointed city commissioner of Edmonton, and in 1924 was appointed president and managing director of Northwestern Utilities, Ltd., distributors of natural gas in Edmonton and various small communities in Northern Alberta. A year later the Canadian Western Natural Gas, Light, Heat and Power Company, gas distributors in Calgary, Lethbridge and intervening towns in Southern Alberta, came under his management.
Mr. Yorath was always keenly interested in athletics, and since coming to Calgary had become well known as a golf and badminton player. He was president of the Calgary Golf and Country Club last year; has been honorary president of the Alberta Badminton Association since its organization, and was honorary president of the Alberta Polo Association. He was a member of the governing board of the Ranchmen's Club and was a member of the Kiwanis Club and the A.F. and A.M.
In 1903 he married Miss Emily Kestell, who survives him. He is also survived by one daughter, Joyce, who has been attending school on Vancouver Island; two sons, Dennis K. and Eric J., who are both in business in Calgary, two brothers and one sister. Several half brothers and sisters also survive him.

C.J. Yorath, Head of Gas Co., Dead
Perhaps we do not appreciate the personal connection with our public utilities till a sudden death or some tragedy surrounds them. Such seemed the case when the death of C.J. Yorath was announced Saturday night from Calgary. He died in the Holy Cross Hospital following a heart collapse at Edmonton when he was called there on the government gas enquiry. He is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter. And he was but 52 years of age.
Born in Cardiff, Wales he took up engineering as a profession and this drew him into strong financial connections. He was city commissioner at Saskatoon and Edmonton. In 1924 he became manager of the North-western Utilities, and a year later accepted the managership of the Calgary Gas Co. which is controlled by the International Utilities and have enterprises in Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC serving more than 20,000 customers. The funeral was held on Tuesday.
Mr Yorath was in Claresholm last October with other company officials for the Southern Alberta service men's banquet and was known personally to quite a number here.
