John Vest was born in March 1869 in West Virginia (U.S. Federal Census. Source Citation: Year: 1900; Census Place: Jumping Branch, Summers, West Virginia; Roll: 1773; Page: 6B; Enumeration District: 129; FHL microfilm: 1241773), a son of Charles Jackson Vest and wife Mary J. Harvey. John was a grandson of Anderson Vest and wife Rhoda Cochran.

Mary Ellen and John had six children: Jane Vest Pack, B.L. Vest, Ordie Jennings Vest, Emma Vest Wilson, Sarah E. Vest and Vergie Vest. Sarah and Vergie died in childhood.

John, 62, was working in Kendallville, Ind., on a farm. He went for a swim with several other people to cool off after work. John, an "expert swimmer," had a heart attack and drowned on Aug. 4, 1930. A brief death notice said his wife was living in Seattle, Washington. Rosa lived in Seattle.
John's death certificate doesn't have much detail but it does say he was married to "Rosa Vest." (Indiana, Death Certificates, 1899-2011).
