Doris Aileen Abbott, 56, 724 Riverside Drive, died at home on Friday, Oct. 5, 2001 at 4 a.m., after an illness of six months.

She was born Nov. 20, 1944 in Sidney, the daughter of Vernon and Wilma (Cleaves) Davis, who survive.

On Dec. 26, 1965, she married James W. Abbott, who survives in Sidney.

She is also survived by three daughters, Mrs. Fabian (Amy) Lucas of Piqua, Beth Abbott of Cincinnati, and Katie, at home; five sons, Scott of Hilliard, Bret of Sidney, Robert, Adam and Lamar all at home, and Jack of Piqua; and a brother, Vernon Davis Jr. of Sidney.

Mrs. Abbott retired after teaching for 25 years in the Sidney, Fairlawn and Hardin-Houston school districts. She created a Developmental Kindergarten at Hardin School and received the Ashland Outstanding Teacher Award. She was the first teacher of the Sidney Cooperative Nursery School.

She was a 1962 graduated of Sidney High School and a graduate of Miami University. She also held a master's degree from Wright State University in early childhood education. After retirement, she entered the nursing school at the Upper Valley JVS.

She was a foster mother to over 90 children during the past 30 years. Over the past several years, she provided specialized foster care to medically fragile infants. She was Foster Parent of the Year three times.

Mrs. Abbott served on the board of Shelby Hills School and as president of the auxiliary. She was a member of the board of Dorothy Love Retirement Community. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was active in the Dorena Circle, taught Sunday School and had been director of the vacation Bible school. Recently, she had worked in the church nursery and crib room.
