Samuel Wilson Abbott, 84, of R.R. 2, Sidney, a life-long resident of Shelby County, died at 5:25 p.m. Tuesday in Wilson Memorial Hospital.
His death resulted from a stroke that he suffered at his home last Friday afternoon.
Mr. Abbott was born in Dinsmore Township, Feb. 4, 1873, a son of Eli and Charity Tuner Abbott. On Dec. 25, 1895, he married Ollie Fay Miars, who passed away Nov. 30, 1948.
They were the parents of nine children, two of whom died in infancy. Survivors include six sons, Frank of Hardin, Forrest of Sidney, Roy of Wayneville, Howard of Grants Pass, Ore., Ben of Dayton, Carl of Port Jefferson, and a daughter, Mrs. Paul (Bernice) Packer of near Sidney.
He is also survived by a brother, William Abbott of Maplewood, 24 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Mr. Abbott followed the blacksmith trade until 1912 and from that time until he retired in 1930 he operated a farm near Hardin. He then moved to Sidney until a few years ago and recently has made his home with his daughter.
He was a member of the Methodist Church at Hardin.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday from the Cromes and Sons funeral home, with William Fuller officiating.
Burial will be in Glen Cemetery at Port Jefferson.
Friends will be received at the funeral home Thursday afternoon and evening and on Friday until noon.
