Bernice A. Sims, age 84, passed away peacefully at her daughter's home in Nashville, Tennessee on July 21, 2011. The widow of Frank T. Sims, she was a retired educator and administrator for the Memphis City Schools. She was also preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Ruby Rowell, and mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Sims, all of Memphis. She is survived by her daughter, Denise Sims of Nashville, her son, Oliver Sims (Pamela) of Hendersonville, Tennessee, four grandchildren, Jerome and Lindsay Rubin and Jennifer and Brittany Sims, four sisters-in-law, Mrs. Gladys Hubbard of Malibu, California, Mrs. Albertine Hedrick (Ray) of North Highlands, California, Mrs. Matilda Rucker of Portland, Oregon and Mrs. Faye Sims Horne of Memphis, her cousin, Mrs. Hattie McGee of Des Moines, Iowa and a host of family and friends. Visitation will be held Monday, July 25, 2011 at the R. S. Lewis and Sons Funeral Home, 374 Vance Avenue, from 5 until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, 555 Vance Avenue, where she was a lifelong and devoted member. Interment will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to The Esther Circle of the Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church (the women's guild) or to Lemoyne-Owen College.
