Major League Baseball Player. The switch hitter played 16 years in the big leagues with the Chicago Cubs (1934-41), the Brooklyn Dodgers (1941-46), the Cincinnati Reds (1947-48), the New York Giants (1949) and Philadelphia Athletics (1949). He fashioned a .287 lifetime batting average, collecting 1,706 hits that included 336 doubles and 100 homers. He drove in 830 runs and scored 1,004 times. Galan played in three losing World Series: in 1935 (4 for 25, .160), 1938 (0 for 2 as a pinch hitter) and 1941 (0 for 2 as a pinch hitter). He also played in the 1936 All-Star Game, hitting a homer in four at-bats. In 1935, he hit .314 with 41 doubles and led the National League with 133 runs scored and 22 stolen bases. He also led in steals in 1937 with 33. He batted .304 in 1939 with 104 runs scored and 36 stolen bases. He had equally good seasons with Brooklyn, hitting .287 in 1943 with a league-high 103 walks. The following year he batted .318 with 43 doubles, 93 runs batted in and a league-leading 101 walks. In 1945, he hit .307, scored 114 runs and walked 114 times. He was traded to the Reds on Dec. 4, 1946 for pitcher Ed Heusser.
