Boyd, Robert J.- enlisted Captain July 25,1861. Killed at Malvern Hill, Va. July 1,1862.

Born about 1824 in South Carolina to Samuel and Isabella Farris Crawford Boyd, Robert J Boyd was the oldest son and second oldest of at least 11 children attributed to this union.

He enlisted in Co K 16th Georgia Infantry. Company K was organized at Columbia County, Ga and was also known as "Ramsey Vols." The Company was entrained at Athens, GA and transported to Richmond, Va where they were assigned to Genl Howell Cobb's Brigade. They were encamped at Richmond from July 19, 1861, issued arms on October 18, 1861, and ordered to Yorktown for which they commenced marching on October 20, 1861.

The Brigade fought with Magruder at Yorktown, Lee's Mill (Dam No. 1), and Williamsburg. They returned to Richmond and were assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia for the Seven Days' Battles. They were engaged at Savages Station, Allen's Farm, and Malvern Hill.

The Battle of Malvern Hill, also known as the Battle of Poindexter's Farm, took place on the last day of the Seven Days Battles in Henrico County, Va. Captain Robert J Boyd was killed "while gallantly leading his company in the charge of the first instant (July 1, 1862), and encouraging them by his noble and fearless example."

He was succeeded by 1st Lieutenant R. A. Lansdell , who was elected Captain July 28, 1862.

Appears on the Register of Claims of Deceased Officers and Soldiers from Georgia which were filed for settlement....
