Mr. Larry Sorrell, 74, of Lanett died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at his residence after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's and dementia.

A memorial service is planned for Thursday, Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Chuck Anderson officiating.

Mr. Sorrel is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janice A. Sorrell; children, Larry Mark Sorrell (Becky) of Bargersville, Ind., and Jennifer Sorrell King (Allyn) of Frisco, Texas; grandchildren, Adam Sorrell of Bargersville and Anna King and Lauren King, both of Frisco; two brothers, Roger Sorrell (Rebecca) and Michael Sorrell (Martha), both of Lanett; two sisters, Dana Sorrell Henderson (Ned) and Sally Sorrell Clark, both of Lanett; and many loving nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grandnephews.

Born April 10, 1939, in Lanett, Mr. Sorrell was the son of the late Jesse and Emma Kate Griffin Sorrell. He was a 1957 graduate of Lanett High School and played on the championship teams coached by Mal Morgan and Ken Avinger.

Mr. Sorrell graduated from Auburn University in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He also did graduate courses at the University of Alabama prior to his employment with the Lanett City School System as vocational director, a position he held for almost 30 years. Mr. Sorrell retired in 1999.

After retirement, Mr. Sorrell was a dedicated member of Carpenters for Christ of East Alabama, serving for 11 years and traveling across the United States to help build churches. Mr. Sorrell retired because of his declining health.

He love the outdoors, fishing and hunting. Mr. Sorrell also enjoyed woodworking projects and especially loved to make turkey calls. He also enjoyed mounting many, many of the deer antlers he had collected over his many years of hunting.

Mr. Sorrell was a member of First Baptist Church of Shawmut, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school assistant teacher and served on the building and grounds committee. He was very active in all activities of the church until his health declined.

Mr. Sorrell will be missed by his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations and memorials be made in his memory to Chattahoochee Hospice.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the memorial service.
