Russell Heward Armstrong passed away peacefully at his home in West Hills on the morning of September 10, 2014.

Russell was born in San Francisco to Heward and Margaret Armstrong.

He attended UC Berkeley prior to enlisting in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, where he was commissioned as a B-17 pilot.

He was stationed in Italy and flew more than twenty-one combat missions as a combat pilot over Germany, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross before being honorably discharged at the end of the war as a First Lieutenant.

Upon his return from the service, he attended and graduated from San Francisco State University.

He later acquired a teaching credential, and taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District until his retirement. Russell was also a licensed real estate broker.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary W. Armstrong; sister, Dorine (Fred) Alvord; daughter, Susan Pierce; sons, Peter (Erin), Timothy (Primrose), and Robert (Suzanne) Armstrong; grandchildren, Michael and Joshua Pierce, Lily (Will) Pauli, Karlie (Spencer) Willhoit, Grant Armstrong, Colin Armstrong, and Brooke Armstrong; and great-grandchildren, Cade Russell Eggleston, and Weston Willhoit. Preceded in death by son, Brian Armstrong.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills.
