Born to Frederick and Ellen (Trowbridge) Tilton. He graduated from Harvard in 1890 and received his M.D. in 1893 from the University of Freiburg in Germany. He was a surgeon in New York at St. Mark's Hospital where he also served as President in 1911. From Dec. 20, 1917 to Feb. 15, 1919, Dr. Tilton served in the Medical Corps of the US Army during World War I and was assigned to various hospitals in France. He returned to surgery in New York City and was a professor of surgery at Fordham University. He married Anna Griggs in 1905 and had three daughters.
